Enrique G. Murillo, Jr., Ph.D. is a tenured FULL PROFESSOR at California State University, San Bernardino, in Educational Research Methods and Foundations. He is a first generation Chicano, born and raised in the greater East side of Los Angeles, and a native bilingual speaker in Spanish/English.
He completed his Ph.D. in the Social Foundations of Education program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His master’s degree from Cal State Los Angeles is in the same area, with coursework toward the bilingual multiple-subject teaching credential; and his bachelor's degree in Psychology from UCLA. He offers both a generalist background in education and schooling, with cognate disciplines in sociology and anthropology. His specialty areas include foundations of education, research methods, critical ethnography, educational anthropology and cultural studies.
He is the FOUNDING EDITOR of the Journal of Latinos and Education (JLE), published quarterly by Taylor & Francis, and EDITOR-IN-CHIEF of the Handbook of Latinos and Education (HLE) by Routledge Books. Additionally, he is the FOUNDER of the National Latino Education Network (NLEN).
Dr. Murillo currently serves as EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR and FOUNDER of the LEAD organization (Latino Education & Advocacy Days), housed in the College of Education at CSUSB, whose objective is to promote a broad-based awareness of the crisis in Latino Education and to enhance the intellectual, cultural and personal development of our community's educators, administrators, leaders and students.
Dr. Murillo currently serves as a White House Adviser, serving on the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics Commission.
Additionally, Dr. Murillo serves as the Faculty Director for the DOCTOR OF EDUCATION IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP Program. The CSUSB Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership is a program of study that focuses on the knowledge and skills needed by administrative leaders in California public elementary and secondary schools (P-12) and community colleges. The Ed.D. in Educational Leadership prepares educators to lead reform efforts in P-12 public schools and community colleges in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.
The LEAD network counts with more than 1600 chapters across 43 countries, and under the LEAD banner, he has initiated or facilitated numerous programs and projects like the IE Regional Collaborative, Cash for College FAFSA Workshops, the Student Parent Academic Resource Campaign, Feria Educativa College and Career Fair, the LEAD Virtual Classroom and Webinar Series, Portraits of Hope Novela Educativa Video Series, LEAD Social Media Ambassadors, the Binational Parent Leadership Institute; and finally, the LEAD Summit which counts with nearly 9 million conference participants.
Dr. Murillo is former CA STUDENT AID COMMISSIONER (California Student Aid Commission or CSAC). CSAC is the principal state agency responsible for administering financial aid programs for students attending public and private universities, colleges, and vocational schools in California. He also served as the PRESIDENT and CHAIR of the EdFund Board. Since 1997, EdFund has provided exceptional services to support students pursuing higher education. Established as a nonprofit public benefit corporation and auxiliary to CSAC, EdFund has worked to administer all activities associated with CSAC's participation in the federal student loan program.
Dr. Murillo also currently serves as the President of the SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CONSORTIUM OF HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS. The SCCHSI is made up of all the regional community colleges and 4-year universities who are Federal Department of Education designated Hispanic-Serving Institutions in So-Cal, from Santa Barbara to the southern border. There are nearly 70 HSIs in the region, the largest in the US.
Dr. Murillo has authored/edited/produced more than 200 publications and scholarly multi-media works, has presented at more than 150 professional conferences, and is the recipient of numerous awards, including NBC News Education Nation Thought Leader, the Outstanding Professor in Professional Growth Accomplishments, Outstanding Advisor, the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Educator of the Year, the Outstanding Support of Hispanic Issues in Higher Education Award by the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education, the TODEC Haciendo La Diferencia Award, the California State University Forgivable Loan, the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the Southern Oral History Award, the prestigious Outstanding Dissertation Award from Phi Delta Kappa, Top 5 Outstanding Dissertation Award from the American Educational Research Association.
Dr. Murillo has been recognized with more than 50 local, regional, state, national and international governmental and congressional commendations. In 2016, Dr. Murillo was awarded the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama, and has twice attended special functions at the White House in Washington, DC, and in 2014, Dr. Murillo was bestowed the Mexican government's Ohtli award. It is the highest honor presented to a civilian outside Mexico for "services rendered to the dissemination of Mexican culture abroad". 'Ohtli' is a Nahuatl word signifying 'path', and "he/she who opens pathways". He was also most recently awarded the "Simposio Internacional Premio" from the Ministry of Cuba, the Friend of Children Award by the Office of Catholic Schools, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chicano Latino Caucus, as well as a Congressional Lifetime Achievement Recipient from the United States House of Representatives.
