The Journal of Latinos and Education (JLE) is published quarterly in January, April, July, and October for a total of 4 issues per year by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC, 325 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
JLE provides a cross-, multi-, and interdisciplinary forum for scholars and writers from diverse disciplines who share a common interest in the analysis, discussion, critique, and dissemination of educational issues that impact Latinos. There are four broad arenas which encompass most issues of relevance: (1) Policy, (2) Research, (3) Practice, and (4) Creative & Literary works.
JLE encourages novel ways of thinking about the ongoing and emerging questions around the unifying thread of Latinos and education. The journal supports dialogical exchange--for researchers, practitioners, authors, and other stakeholders who are working to advance understanding at all levels and aspects--be it theoretical, conceptual, empirical, clinical, historical, methodological, and/or other in scope.
JLE seeks to identify and stimulate more relevant research, practice, communication, and theory by providing a rich variety of information and fostering an outlet for sharing. The various manifestations of the diverse frameworks and topical areas typically range anywhere from--but aren't limited to--theoretical and empirical analyses, policy discussions, research reports, program recommendations, evaluation studies, finding and improving practical applications, carefully documenting the transition of theory into real-world practice, linking theory and research, new dissertation research, literature reviews, reflective discussions, cultural studies, and literary works.
JLE is open to varying research methodologies and narrative models so as to encourage submissions from varied disciplines, areas, and fields. "Education" is defined in the broad cultural sense and not limited to just formal schooling. Particular attention is given to geographical equity to assure representation of all regions and "Latino" groups in the United States. Policies and practices promoting equity and social justice for linguistically and culturally diverse groups are particularly encouraged and welcomed for consideration. A range of formats for articles is encouraged, including research articles, essay reviews and interviews, practitioner and community perspectives, book and media reviews, and other forms of creative critical writing.
The broad spectrum of researchers, teaching professionals and educators, academics, scholars, administrators, independent writers and artists, policy and program specialists, students, parents, families, civic leaders, activists, and advocates. In short, individuals, groups, agencies, organizations, and institutions sharing a common interest and committment to the educational issues that impact Latinos.
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION: Prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), most recent edition. Manuscripts not in this style will not be reviewed. Special consideration is given to creative and literary works not appropriately covered by APA. Double space all components of the manuscript (title page, abstract, text, quotes, acknowledgments, references, appendixes, tables, figure captions, and footnotes). The first page should include the manuscript title, authors' names, affiliations, complete mailing addresses (including e-mail), and the telephone and fax numbers of the author to whom editorial correspondence is to be addressed. The second page should consist of a brief descriptive abstract or synopsis (maximum of 100 words). References to all tables and figures should be explicit in text, and notes as to their approximate placement should be made in the manuscript. All figures must be camera ready. Using 1-inch margins on all sides of the page, manuscripts should be typed using a 12-point font size; all pages must be numbered. Only original material will be accepted.
To submit your manuscript, you will need the following files:
- A Title page file with the names of all authors and co-authors*
- Main document file with abstract, keywords, main text and references
- Figure files
- Table files
- Any extra files such as Supplemental files or Author Biographical notes
You can use the Word template to format your files. *Since you are submitting to a journal that uses double-blind peer review, please note that you will need to save the title page as a separate file and designate it as “not for review”.
PERMISSIONS and CREDIT LINES: Authors should state that the manuscript represents results of original work, the findings reported in the manuscript have not been published previously, and that the manuscript is not being simultaneously submitted elsewhere. If pertinent, authors should also state that they have complied with American Psychological Association ethical standards in the treatment of their samples. In addition, six key words describing the manuscript should be provided for identification and to ensure proper matching for reviews. Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work and for obtaining permission from copyright owners to reprint or adapt a table or figure, or to reprint a quotation of 500 words or more. Authors should write to original author(s) and publisher to request nonexclusive world rights in all languages to use the material in the article and in future editions. Provide copies of all permissions and credit lines at the time of manuscript submission. Contact the editor for sample permission request forms.
Identify the section under which the submission applies:
Feature Articles: Theory, Research, Policy, and Practice: Rigorous, innovative, and critical scholarship comprising empirical, methodological, applied, theoretical, programmatic, perspective, and policy articles relevant to educational issues that impact Latinos. All modes of inquiry are welcome: observational, experimental, ethnographic, textual, sociological, historical, philosophical, interpretive, survey, and others. Suggested manuscript length is 20 to 30 pages.
Essay Reviews and Interviews: Commentary, literature, and conceptual review papers that are integrative and timely, evaluating and synthesizing a relevant issue. Included also may be symposia, point-counterpoint debates, task force reports, position papers, brief letters and reactions to policies and actions, and solicited commentaries and interviews with specialists and other figures who have made an impact. Suggested manuscript length is 7 to 12 pages.
Voces: Community, Parents, Teachers, and Students: Descriptions, data-driven research reports and case studies, and/or more reflective essays by school "actors" and practitioners who have important knowledge, research, or reflection about educational settings that impact Latinos. Issues of practice and philosophy of teaching and learning are addressed from the voices of community, parents, teachers, and students. Suggested manuscript length is 7 to 15 pages.
Book and Media Reviews: Summaries and evaluations of books, periodicals, articles, Websites, software, CD-ROMs, teaching material, textbooks, videotapes, film, art, music, and other media. Suggested manuscript length is 2 to 3 pages.

Alternative Formats: Personal perspectives and narratives, short tales, confessional or testimonial stories, humor, poetry, drama, artwork, and other creative productions, and representations that transgress or transverse "academic" standards. Suggested manuscript length is 1 to 7 pages.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: Journal of Latinos and Education receives all manuscript submissions electronically via their ScholarOne Manuscripts website. MANUSCRIPT ACCEPTANCE: Once your manuscript has been accepted, the transfer to the Production Editor at Taylor & Francis is faster using the ScholarOne® platform, with the files and associated information going straight into CATS, our article tracking system, so that it can begin the production process. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.
PROOFS AND REPRINTS: Authors' files are copyedited and typeset into page proofs. Contact authors bear sole responsibility for reading proofs to correct errors and answer editors' queries. Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis’ Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.
COLOR REPRODUCTION: Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction.Color art can be purchased for online only conversion and reproduction or for print + online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if print + online reproduction costs are paid.
